Louis Nordby

Louis Arthur Nordby, age 100, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2020 at ShorePointe Nursing Center in St. Clair Shores.  He was the husband of Catherine (Samela) Nordby.  Louis was previously a resident of Middlebury, CT for more than 55 years.

Louis was born in Millville, Massachusetts on October 13, 1919, a son of the late Louis S. and Cora (Atchison) Nordby.  He was a graduate of Naugatuck High School and New Haven YMCA Junior College (Univ. of New Haven).  Louis served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer during WWII.

He worked at Mattatuck Manufacturing for the majority of his career as a tool and die maker. Over the years, Lou tirelessly supported his family while asking little for himself.  Beyond his work life, Lou was a skilled woodworker and an inventive craftsman, who could build or fix anything.  He enjoyed teaching young journeymen and had a love of mathematics.  He was an avid fan of the UCONN Women’s Basketball team and the Boston Red Sox.  Most notably, Lou was a patriot who showed respect and love of his country by raising the American flag each week at his home in Middlebury and taking time to recognize Veterans’ Day or Memorial Day with family visits to an Armed Forces Base or other veteran related sites.

Besides his wife of 70 years, he leaves three children; William J. Nordby (Margaret) of Ohio, Mary Nordby Caisse of East Haven, CT and Catherine Nordby, M.D. (Gerard Martin, M.D) of Michigan with whom he made his home for several years; seven grandchildren, Heather (Todd) Williams, Rebecca Nordby (Shawn Osika), Philip Caisse, Emily Caisse, Gerard (Courtney) Martin, Elizabeth (Michael) Glazier and Spencer (Katelynn) Martin; six great-grandchildren, Victoria and Ryan Williams, Genevieve and William Osika, Adeline and Cora Martin; and many nieces and nephews.

He also leaves a sister Barbara (Robert) Mariano of Middlebury, CT and a brother, Robert Nordby of Plymouth, MA.  Louis was pre-deceased by two brothers; Cpl. William E. Nordby who was killed in WWII and John Nordby, DDS.

Due to the current Corona Virus restrictions, a graveside service at Lake Elise Cemetery, Middlebury, CT will be scheduled for a future date.  There are no calling hours.  The Walter Scott Skupny Funeral Home in Roseville, Michigan has been entrusted with Louis’ arrangements.
