George 'Digger' Salowich Stevens age 85. Passed away peacefully on October 7, 2017 at home in Englewood, Florida. He was born May 24, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan to George and Susan Salowich.
George grew up in Detroit Michigan and Graduated from University if Detroit in 1950. He was a Korean War Veteran and served in the United States Army as a supply Sergeant from 1952-1954. He received an honorable discharge and was relieved from active duty. He studied Mortuary Science and worked along side his father at their family owned funeral home, Salowich and Stevens in Detroit, MI. Growing up with Ukrainian heritage he was an avid Russian dancer and instructor.
George worked as a funeral director for 50 years then retired in Florida. He was a life member of Western Golf Country Club in Redford, Michigan and member of Rotonda Golf and Country Club in Englewood, Florida. He enjoyed playing golf and cards with his friends. George was a strong, caring man who loved to tell jokes! He was a loved man and lived a full life surrounded by family and friends.
George is survived by his loving companion and partner Lora Resignato of Englewood Florida; Brother LeRoy (Carole) Salowich; his sons Gregory (Teresa) and Jeffrey (Kristin); granddaughters Anastasia (Scott) Chase; Carley; grandsons Alexander and Jacob of Detroit, Michigan, and other relatives.
Viewing and service at Holy Spirit Orthodox Church 700 Shamrock Blvd. Venice, Florida. October 13, 2017 4-8:00 pm, service at 7:30 pm. Memorial and burial at Great Lakes National Cemetery 4200 Belford Road, Holy Michigan October 20, 2017, 9:00 am.
